US President Donald Trump stated on Thursday that lower oil prices might contribute to an immediate end to the Ukraine conflict.
Speaking via teleconference during the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump expressed his intent to urge Saudi Arabia and OPEC to lower global oil prices.
“If the price came down, the Russia-Ukraine war would end immediately,” he remarked, adding that “Right now, the price is high enough that the war will continue.”
The President also mentioned that he "really would like to be able to meet with President Putin soon and get that war ended."
Throughout his campaign, Trump claimed he could stop the fighting within 24 hours if elected again. However, since resuming office, his stance has shifted, as he issued a thinly veiled ultimatum to Russia on Wednesday, calling on Moscow to conclude the Ukraine conflict and negotiate a “deal,” or risk new sanctions and increased import tariffs.
Additionally, Trump confirmed reports that Saudi Arabia plans to invest “at least $600 billion in America” and indicated that he would ask the Crown Prince, “who’s a fantastic guy,” to increase that amount to around $1 trillion.
“I think they’ll do that because we’ve been very good to them,” he said.
In November, the Financial Times reported that Trump had vowed to eliminate restrictions on US energy producers to drive down prices and enhance domestic output. The Republican, who campaigned under the slogan “Drill, baby, drill,” has previously indicated that the US possesses “more liquid gold than any country in the world, more than Saudi Arabia.”
