The Allenby Bridge, or King Hussein Bridge, is located over the River Jordan, east of Jericho and close to the Jordanian town of al-Karameh. It serves as the only official crossing between Jordan and the West Bank. Following the attack, the crossing was closed on Sunday, but it reopened on Monday, albeit only to pedestrians.
“A terrorist approached the area of the Allenby Bridge from Jordan in a truck, exited the truck, and opened fire at the Israeli security forces operating at the bridge,” stated the Israel Defense Forces.
“The terrorist was eliminated by the security forces, three Israeli civilians were pronounced dead as a result of the attack,” the IDF added.
The victims have been identified by West Jerusalem as Yuri Birnbaum, Yohanan Shchori, and Adrian Marcelo Podzamczer.
The closure of the Allenby Bridge primarily affects approximately three million Palestinians in the West Bank who rely on goods from the region through Jordan.
Jordanian authorities have named the attacker as Maher Ziab Hussein al-Jazi, 39, from Husseiniya in the Ma’an governorate. The Jordanian government announced that it would investigate the incident.
In response to the attack, hundreds gathered in the streets of the Jordanian capital, voicing their support for Hussein and claiming that he had avenged the deaths of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza, as reported by Reuters.
The early Hamas strikes on October 7 last year resulted in around 1,200 Israeli deaths. As of Sunday, the Gaza health ministry reported that nearly 41,000 Palestinians in the enclave had died and approximately 95,000 others were wounded due to ongoing Israeli military operations.
Jordan controlled the present-day West Bank beginning in 1949 and annexed it the following year. Israel captured it during the June 1967 war, along with Gaza, which had been under Egyptian control. Jordan renounced all claims to the territory in its peace treaty with Israel in 1994.
