Syria's Transitional Government Commences Operations
The newly appointed prime minister has been given a mandate to manage daily operations until March 1, 2025.

Syrian caretaker Prime Minister Mohammed al-Bashir announced that his government will operate until a permanent cabinet is anticipated to be established on March 1, 2025.

Al-Bashir, who previously headed the government associated with Islamists from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in Idlib, was appointed following the weekend takeover of Damascus by a coalition of opposition groups that resulted in the ousting of Syria’s long-standing president, Bashar Assad.

In his inaugural interview as prime minister, al-Bashir informed Al Jazeera on Tuesday that “members from the old government and some directors from the administration in Idlib” have been called upon to assist in “facilitating all the necessary works for the next two months until we have a constitutional system to be able to serve the Syrian people.” He emphasized, “Now it is time for these people to enjoy stability and calm.”

Al-Bashir’s appointment followed discussions with HTS leader Abu Mohammad al-Julani and former Assad government prime minister, Mohammad al-Jalali. Reports indicate that ministers from the anti-Assad HTS-led administration in Idlib have already relocated to Damascus.

Al Jazeera reported that sources in Damascus claim the existing security services will be dismantled, and current anti-terrorism laws will be revoked. The new authorities are tasked with reorganizing the military, with the cabinet’s focus being on security and public services.

While HTS has committed to safeguarding Syria’s religious minorities, concerns persist regarding the group’s historical connections to Al-Qaeda and its role in civilian massacres during the war. It remains classified as a terrorist organization by both the UN and the US.

Outgoing US President Joe Biden remarked on Sunday, “Make no mistake, some of the rebel groups that took down Assad have their own grim record of terrorism and human rights abuses.” He added that Washington “will assess not just their words, but their actions.”

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has urged the new Syrian authorities to create a unity government that will operate “in an orderly manner” and encompass “all parties inside Syria.”
