Swedish man dies in combat while supporting Ukraine, reports say
A Swedish national who fought alongside the Ukrainian army was killed in action last week, according to a report by Swedish broadcaster SVT on Wednesday.

The report indicated that the individual was "an experienced soldier" who made his way to Ukraine in 2022. He served in various locations, including areas near Kiev and the Donbass city of Artyomovsk, as well as "in Russia."

While SVT did not disclose the specific location of his death, it was noted that Russian troops are currently engaged in efforts to drive the Ukrainian army out of Russia’s Kursk Region, which was invaded by Kiev’s forces in early August.

The broadcaster referenced statements from the Swedish Foreign Ministry, revealing that eight Swedish nationals have lost their lives in Ukraine since February 2022, following Russia’s military intervention in the neighboring country.

Moscow has consistently asserted that foreign "mercenaries" are fighting alongside Ukraine's regular forces and taking part in cross-border operations. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova mentioned on Monday that recent fatalities included US, Canadian, and Polish citizens during a failed incursion attempt in Bryansk Region.

In December 2023, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that over 5,800 foreigners fighting for Kiev had died in nearly two years of conflict. Meanwhile, in February 2024, military news outlet Task and Purpose reported that at least 50 Americans had been killed in Ukraine, most of them while serving alongside Kiev’s troops.
