Strategic Cruise Missiles Launched by North Korea
North Korea has reportedly conducted successful launches of several sea-based long-range strategic cruise missiles, as announced by the state-run KCNA agency on Sunday. This test comes amid ongoing regional tensions and shortly after US President Donald Trump took office.

According to the agency, the launch on Saturday involved an unspecified number of projectiles that successfully struck targets 1,500 km away. The report indicated that the test, which was observed by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un along with other senior officials, was “aimed at improving the effectiveness of the strategic deterrence against the potential enemies.”

The KCNA stated that the launch “had no negative impact on the security of the neighboring countries.”

South Korea’s military confirmed the missile launches, stating that multiple cruise missiles were fired from an inland area toward the Yellow Sea, as per Yonhap News. The South Korean and US intelligence officials are currently analyzing the test.

The launch occurred as North Korea’s Foreign Ministry accused the US and South Korea of heightening tensions on the peninsula through their joint military exercises. The ministry also criticized Washington for the “ceaseless expansion of the military alliance system.”

It was claimed by the ministry that the current situation necessitates Pyongyang to “counter the US with the toughest counteraction from A to Z” as long as North Korea's security interests and sovereignty are disregarded.

This development marks North Korea's first missile test following Trump’s inauguration on January 20. The US president previously expressed his intention to engage with Kim. During his first term, Trump met with the North Korean leader several times and made history in 2019 by becoming the first US president to visit North Korea. However, these historic efforts did not lead to concrete agreements on denuclearization.

In recent months, North Korea has frequently tested its missile systems, often responding to US-South Korea drills, which Pyongyang perceives as rehearsals for a potential invasion. Washington and Seoul maintain that their exercises are defensive and aimed at enhancing regional security.
