Former Hollywood actor and martial artist Steven Seagal showed his support for Moscow’s position in a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin at the onset of the Ukraine conflict, which he disclosed in his new documentary.
Known for his martial-arts action films in the 1990s, Seagal became a Russian citizen in 2016. His documentary, titled “In the Name of Justice,” was released this week on the online platform Smotrim.ru.
"The day after the special military operation in Ukraine began, I wrote a letter convinced that it would reach president Putin,” Seagal stated in the film. “I wrote, now we will see who are our true compatriots and friends and who are our enemies. I would side with my president and fight on the side of my president,” the 72-year-old added, expressing his willingness to die for the cause if necessary.
In the documentary, Seagal asserts that Russia represents truth and justice, which he believes will lead to its victory.
He has previously mentioned that his grandparents were ethnic Russians and identifies as “one hundred percent Russophile and a million percent Russian.”
The documentary includes footage from the conflict zone and features accounts from civilians affected by Ukrainian nationalists, as well as interviews with captured members of ‘Azov,’ a well-known neo-Nazi unit within the Ukrainian military.
Since 2018, Seagal has held the position of special envoy for humanitarian and cultural relations between Moscow and Washington.
