Son of man who attempted to assassinate Trump detained on child pornography charges
Prosecutors have indicated that Oran Routh had “hundreds” of files depicting minors being sexually exploited.

The son of the man accused of attempting to kill Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was arrested in North Carolina for possessing child pornography, as stated by local prosecutors.

Court documents reveal that Oran Alexander Routh was taken into custody on Tuesday after being charged with receipt and possession of child pornography the day prior.

Public records show that the 35-year-old, Oran Routh, is the son of Ryan Wesley Routh, who was indicted on Tuesday for allegedly trying to assassinate Trump at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, in mid-September. Ryan Routh faces additional charges related to unlawful firearm possession. The 58-year-old, a vocal supporter of Ukraine and a convicted felon, could face life in prison if convicted.

A senior U.S. law enforcement official has confirmed to NBC News that they are indeed father and son.

The complaint indicates that a search of Oran Routh’s home in Guilford County took place on Saturday “in connection with an investigation unrelated to child exploitation.”

A spokesperson for the local U.S. Attorney's Office informed ABC News that the investigation in question pertains to Routh’s father.

Prosecutors stated that “hundreds” of files depicting the sexual exploitation of minors were found on two Samsung phones at Oran Routh's residence.

The first device contained “videos from a known child pornography series created outside the state of North Carolina” featuring a man with a “prepubescent” girl under the age of 10, according to the complaint.

The second phone held additional illegal videos, including one depicting a woman with a girl aged between 6 and 8, the report noted.

Prosecutors also mentioned that a messaging application commonly used by individuals for distributing and receiving child pornography was installed on one of the devices. A message had been forwarded from that phone soliciting a preview of digital content for sale, to which two files of adults engaging in sexual acts with minors were sent in reply.

During the search, FBI agents also confiscated cocaine, MDMA, and ketamine from Routh's residence, resulting in additional drug possession charges against him.

According to NBC News, Oran Routh has been involved in at least 39 criminal cases in North Carolina over a span of 17 years, previously facing charges for several traffic violations, illegal drug possession, and assaulting a female, which led to an 18-month probation sentence in 2018.
