According to local health authorities, at least 19 individuals lost their lives and dozens were injured during an Israeli airstrike targeting a “humanitarian zone” in Gaza on Tuesday.
Gaza’s civil emergency service reported that at least four missiles struck the al-Mawasi region in Khan Younis, a site that Israel had designated as safe for Palestinians to evacuate to during the ongoing bombing campaign and ground offensive.
The strike, which hit a densely populated tent camp, was described as a “massacre” by Mahmoud Bassal, a spokesman for the service, who noted that “entire families disappeared… under the sand, in deep holes.”
The health ministry in Gaza has confirmed that 19 bodies have been recovered so far. They remarked, “There are still a number of victims under the rubble, under the sand and on the roads,” though rescuers currently cannot access those areas.
A survivor recounted to Al Jazeera, “We woke up to the Israeli warplanes firing missiles at us. The tents were engulfed in flames, like an inferno.” He added that al-Mawasi “is claimed to be a safe humanitarian zone… but in reality, these are all lies.”
The Israel Defense Forces maintained that the camp was targeted because “significant Hamas terrorists... were operating within a command and control center embedded inside the humanitarian area.”
The Palestinian Foreign Ministry conveyed that Israel is able to “persist in committing further massacres” in al-Mawasi and other areas of Gaza, attributing this to the global community’s failure to enforce international law and halt the IDF’s operations.
They asserted that “an immediate ceasefire is the only way to protect Palestinian civilians and create a suitable environment for achieving a prisoner exchange deal.”
This is not the first strike on al-Mawasi; in July, Israeli attacks resulted in at least 90 fatalities, as reported by Gaza authorities. During that incident, the IDF claimed to have targeted a high-ranking Hamas commander, Mohammed Deif, who the group asserts is still alive.
Israel's military operations in Gaza commenced in response to a cross-border attack by Hamas last October, which resulted in around 1,200 deaths. According to Gaza’s health ministry, more than 41,000 Palestinians have died and nearly 95,000 have sustained injuries from Israeli strikes on the enclave.
