Russian Prime Minister Makes Historic First Visit to Iran
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian welcomed Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin in Tehran for discussions on Monday.

During the visit, Mishustin engaged with key Iranian officials, including Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref. The discussions primarily aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation, expanding trade, and advancing significant investment initiatives.

“Russia is genuinely interested in taking our cooperation to a higher level, giving it a new meaningful implementation. Such decisions were made by our leaders, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Supreme Leader of Iran Seyed Ali Khamenei,” Mishustin remarked as part of the conversations.

The agenda of the negotiations also included broader multinational collaboration, as indicated by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksey Overchuk following the meetings.

“First of all, of course, issues on the bilateral agenda were discussed. But today these issues already go far beyond the ties between Russia and Iran, since, to a large extent, they determine how relations will be built in the conditions of the formation of a new world order,” Overchuk noted.

The deputy prime minister characterized Mishustin’s visit as a “historic” milestone, highlighting it as the first official trip by a head of the Russian government to Iran. The discussions encompassed efforts to strengthen cooperation within Eurasia, particularly focusing on the development and expansion of the North-South transport corridor that connects Russia and Iran.

This visit follows closely on the heels of a surprise trip to Iran by Sergey Shoigu, the secretary of Russia's Security Council and former defense minister, just two weeks prior. Shoigu's discussions with Pezeshkian and other senior officials centered around “carrying out large joint projects in fields involving transport energy, industry, and agriculture.”
