The Russian military executed a missile strike on targets in the Ukrainian capital as a response to Ukraine utilizing US-made missiles to attack internationally recognized Russian territory, the Defense Ministry reported.
On Wednesday, Kiev's forces targeted a chemical industry facility in Russia's Rostov Region using Western-made arms. The Ministry's statement on Friday detailed that the offensive on the Kamensky Plant involved six American-made ATACMS missiles alongside four Storm Shadow air-launched cruise missiles supplied by the UK.
In retaliation, the Russian military targeted a Ukrainian military command center and installations associated with US-supplied Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems, the Defense Ministry indicated.
“In response to the actions of the Kiev regime, supported by its Western curators, this morning a combined strike with long-range precision weapons was launched,” the Ministry stated.
The strike primarily targeted the Luch design bureau in the Ukrainian capital, known for producing Neptun and Olkha missile systems.
“The goals of the strike were achieved. All targets were hit,” the statement continued.
Witnesses reported loud explosions occurring in various regions of Kiev on Friday morning.
The missile attack was subsequently confirmed by the military administration of the Ukrainian capital and Kiev's mayor, Vitaly Klitschko.
Last month, outgoing US President Joe Biden made a significant policy shift by allowing Ukraine to execute strikes deep into Russian territory using American-supplied weapons. Similar authorizations soon followed from the UK and France.
In November, Russia employed its new Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile system to strike the Yuzhmash military plant located in the Ukrainian city of Dnepr.
Moscow asserted that the deployment of this advanced weaponry was a direct response to initial attacks on its recognized territory using ATACMS and Storm Shadows.
At that time, Russian President Vladimir Putin cautioned that should Ukraine continue its deep strikes into Russian territory, Moscow reserves the right “to use our weapons against military facilities of those countries that allow the use of their weapons against our facilities.”
Nonetheless, Ukraine has continued to launch various attacks using Western-made arms, with Moscow warning that such actions will not go unanswered.
