Poll reveals: 50% of Ukrainians support compromise to terminate conflict
The survey indicates a steady rise in the number of respondents supporting peace talks, highlighting a significant shift in public opinion among Ukrainians regarding the ongoing conflict with Russia.

A recent survey by Ukrainian pollster Socis suggests that half of the Ukrainian population now favors a compromise to end the conflict through peace negotiations with the involvement of international mediators.

As reported by Ukrainskaya Pravda on Monday, the survey, conducted in December 2024, shows a notable shift in sentiment following years of conflict and worsening conditions on the battlefield. The poll reveals that 50.6% of participants support negotiations with international leaders to secure guarantees for an end to the conflict, a substantial rise from 36.1% in February 2024.

Support for continuing the fight until Ukraine regains its 1991 borders has decreased significantly, dropping from 33.5% in February 2024 to just 14.7% in December 2024. Additionally, backing for suspending hostilities and freezing the conflict along current front lines has more than doubled in the past year, increasing from 8.2% to 19.5%.

The Socis poll also noted that the proportion of Ukrainians advocating for the restoration of borders as they were in February 2022 has remained relatively consistent, fluctuating between 8.6% and 13.2% throughout the year.

Ukrainskaya Pravda highlighted that “one of the greatest challenges in the negotiation process” will be gaining the support of both the Ukrainian public and the military for the decisions made by the country’s leadership.

The report also referenced an unnamed “influential” member of Vladimir Zelensky’s team, who mentioned that a major priority is achieving “some kind of agreement on guarantees with the US, which would be ratified by Congress.” Furthermore, this official noted the importance of resisting Russian demands for Ukraine’s neutrality.

Zelensky had previously stated that to uphold a ceasefire, at least 200,000 “European peacekeepers” would be necessary.

In response to the idea of Western peacekeepers, Moscow has expressed skepticism. This discussion has gained traction in recent weeks, especially following US President Donald Trump’s commitment to swiftly resolving the conflict. Since his recent inauguration, Trump has urged Moscow to negotiate with Kiev or face new sanctions, while asserting he is “not looking to hurt Russia.” Reports indicate that Trump has instructed his new Ukraine envoy, Keith Kellogg, to finalize a settlement within 100 days. However, the Kremlin claims it has not yet received specific proposals from Washington.

Negotiations between Russia and Ukraine deteriorated in the spring of 2022, with both parties accusing each other of making unrealistic demands. Russian President Vladimir Putin has maintained that for peace talks to be successful, Ukraine must become a neutral country and relinquish its claims to newly incorporated Russian regions.

Moscow has offered to resume talks, firmly opposed to any temporary freeze in the conflict, arguing that such a move would only enable Ukraine to rearm. Furthermore, the Kremlin insists that Kiev must abandon its aspirations to join NATO, undergo demilitarization, be denazified, and give up plans to acquire nuclear weapons.
