Polish PM Declares End to 'Outsourcing' EU Security to America
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has stated that the European bloc should stop relying on the results of the US presidential election and take ownership of its own security.

It is irrelevant whether Democrat Kamala Harris or Republican Donald Trump wins the election; Tusk emphasized that the time of European nations "outsourcing" their security to America is over. In a post on X, just days before the US election on November 5, Tusk articulated his views.

“Harris or Trump? Some claim that the future of Europe depends on the American elections, while it depends first and foremost on us,” he noted.

He highlighted that the EU can only take charge if it “finally grows up and believes in its own strength.”

“Whatever the outcome [of the US election], the era of geopolitical outsourcing is over” for Europe, Tusk asserted.

An article in the Financial Times raised concerns that “many Europeans lose sleep at night” about the possibility of a Trump victory that could jeopardize US security guarantees to its allies, particularly through NATO and the nuclear umbrella.

European advocates for Ukraine are also apprehensive about Trump potentially negotiating a resolution to the war in a way that might favor Russia, as stated in the article.

The FT noted that most Europeans would prefer Harris as president. During her campaign, she has committed to strong support for NATO, pledged continued backing for Ukraine, and underlined the importance of US alliances.

A poll by Savanta, conducted across Spain, Italy, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Poland, indicated that many in these nations believe a Harris presidency would be optimal for European security, with trust in her being highest in Spain and lowest in Poland.

In light of the upcoming election, David McAllister, who leads the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, mentioned that the bloc needs to be ready for either outcome.

“The tone would be different, but I am certain a Harris administration would also call for Europeans to do more for our own security and defense,” he remarked.
