The administration of US President Donald Trump has no plans to deploy American troops to Ukraine, according to Hegseth, as the US aims to transfer the responsibility of supporting Kiev to its European allies.
Hegseth’s remarks on Tuesday occurred ahead of Keith Kellogg, the US presidential envoy assigned to resolve the Ukraine conflict, meeting with European officials at the Munich Security Conference on Friday to discuss Trump’s strategy.
“At the Ukraine contact group and the NATO ministerial, we’re going to have straight talk with our friends,” Hegseth told reporters during a press conference in Germany.
“It ought to be those in the neighborhood investing the most in that collective and individual defense,” he stated, adding that Washington is encouraging NATO nations to allocate more than 2% of their GDP to defense. “We believe that needs to be higher. The president has said 5%.”
When asked if Washington would consider sending troops to Ukraine to monitor weapons shipments, Hegseth made it clear:
“We are not sending US troops to Ukraine.”
Since taking office, Trump has adopted an ‘America First’ approach, which includes suspending much US foreign aid, including assistance to Ukraine, and threatening tariffs on allied countries, accusing them of engaging in unfair trade practices.
He has also committed to swiftly ending the conflict in Ukraine. Last month, Trump threatened to impose stricter sanctions on Russia if it does not agree to a deal.
Kellogg is anticipated to assess the readiness of Washington’s EU and NATO allies to deploy their own “deterrent forces to ensure that any peace settlement holds,” Bloomberg reported on Monday.
Russia has indicated that it will regard any foreign troops sent to Ukraine without a UN mandate as legitimate military targets, warned Vassily Nebenzia, Moscow’s ambassador to the UN, on Monday.
While Moscow has expressed a willingness to negotiate, it has dismissed the notion of a temporary ceasefire, contending that it would merely provide Ukraine with the opportunity to regroup and rearm. Any agreement must be permanent and legally binding to tackle the fundamental issues of the conflict, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
