According to Reuters, sources familiar with the discussions have indicated that Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates may serve as potential venues for a summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. This news follows Trump's recent comments expressing his desire to quickly bring an end to the Ukraine conflict and his openness to meeting with Putin.
While there have been no confirmed direct contacts between the US and Russia regarding the summit, senior Russian officials have recently visited both Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Both nations have maintained a neutral position during the Ukraine conflict, facilitating conversations with leaders from both Russia and Ukraine. Their neutrality and established ties with both Trump and Putin make them appropriate candidates to host the summit, as noted by the outlet.
The choice of venue is reportedly being shaped by the current geopolitical situation, with traditional Western locations considered unsuitable due to the regional support for Ukraine.
Both Trump and Putin have been fostering positive relations with the leaders of Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Notably, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was the first foreign leader Trump spoke with after assuming office. During a recent video address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump called the crown prince “a fantastic guy.”
Last September, Putin expressed his appreciation to bin Salman for his role in facilitating the largest prisoner swap between the US and Russia since the Cold War, stating, “We are grateful to him, because this resulted in the return of our citizens to their homeland.”
Neither Washington nor Moscow has made comments regarding the potential meeting of the two leaders. In a recent statement, Trump revealed that his administration has “meetings and talks scheduled with various parties, including Ukraine and Russia.”
Russian officials have expressed their openness to discussing the Ukraine conflict with the US, although they emphasized that no significant agreements on discussions have been established yet.
