Hegseth reportedly disclosed the same details regarding the attack that were published last month by The Atlantic after a mistake placed its editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, in a separate chat on the Signal app, creating an awkward situation for senior officials in U.S. President Donald Trump's national security team.
The Times, referencing four sources familiar with the message group, noted that this secondary chat contained details about the timing of the air strikes.
"The truth is that there is an informal group chat that started before confirmation of his closest advisers," an official was quoted as saying. "Nothing classified was ever discussed on that chat."
According to The Wall Street Journal, Hegseth's wife, Jennifer, a former Fox News producer, has also participated in sensitive meetings with foreign military officials.
The disclosure of further use of Signal for classified information occurs amid reports that one of Hegseth's top advisors, Dan Caldwell, was removed from the Pentagon last week after being identified during a leak investigation within the Department of Defense, as reported by Reuters, citing a U.S. official.
In the wake of Caldwell's exit, less senior officials Darin Selnick, who recently became Hegseth's deputy chief of staff, and Colin Carroll, former chief of staff to Deputy Defense Secretary Steve Feinberg, were placed on administrative leave, according to officials.
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer called for Hegseth's dismissal due to these missteps.
"The details keep coming out. We keep learning how Pete Hegseth put lives at risk. But Trump is still too weak to fire him," Schumer posted on X. "Pete Hegseth must be fired."
The Trump administration has actively sought to address leaks, a campaign that Hegseth has strongly supported while at the Pentagon.
Neither the National Security Council nor a Pentagon spokesperson responded immediately to inquiries regarding the additional chat group.
