The poll, which gathered responses from 2,128 adults between January 2 and 10, highlighted strong support for several of Trump’s key policy priorities, including a focus on reducing illegal immigration and implementing protectionist measures against Chinese imports.
Notably, over two-thirds of respondents oppose providing ‘gender-affirming care’ to children, which is another significant aspect of Trump’s agenda. Approximately 71% of Americans believe that puberty-blocking drugs or hormones should not be prescribed to minors.
In December, Trump committed to ending “transgender lunacy,” with plans to ban sex change surgeries for minors and prevent trans athletes from competing in women’s sports. This stance resonates with a majority of the public, as nearly four in five respondents agree that athletes ‘assigned male’ at birth but who have transitioned should not participate against women.
The survey also indicated widespread support for deporting illegal immigrants with criminal records, a central theme of Trump’s reelection campaign. More than half of respondents either strongly or somewhat support deporting all illegal immigrants currently in the U.S.
Additionally, nearly two-thirds of respondents, including 54% of Hispanics and 44% of Democrats, favor deporting undocumented migrants who arrived during President Joe Biden’s last four years. The Biden administration has rescinded several immigration restrictions enacted by Trump during his first term, leading to a surge in illegal immigration.
Regarding Trump’s proposals to impose heavier tariffs on Chinese and Mexican imports, support is nearly evenly divided, with a slight lean towards opposition. About 46% support increasing tariffs on goods from these countries, while 50% oppose such measures.
As of Friday, Trump’s favorability rating hovers just below 50%, according to data from poll aggregator website FiveThirtyEight.
The NYT/Ipsos poll also reveals that more than half of Americans perceive the overall U.S. political system as broken. Approximately 57% of Democrats and 63% of Republicans share the belief that the political system has been dysfunctional for decades.
