In a televised address following a meeting with his security cabinet, Netanyahu revealed that the ceasefire agreement is nearly finalized, pending only government approval. He did not specify a timeline, mentioning merely that “the duration of the ceasefire depends on what takes place in Lebanon.”
Netanyahu emphasized that, “with the full understanding with the US, we are maintaining full freedom of action” against Hezbollah, and warned that any potential violations of the ceasefire would be met “with force.”
He added, “If Hezbollah violates the agreement and tries to rearm, we will attack,” further clarifying, “If it tries to rebuild the terror infrastructure near the border, we will attack. If it fires a rocket, if it digs a tunnel, if it brings in a truck with missiles, we will attack.”
Reports indicate that the ceasefire is set to go into effect tomorrow at 10 a.m. local time. Under the terms, Israel will withdraw its forces from Lebanon over a period of 60 days, while Hezbollah and other Lebanon-based armed groups must refrain from any attacks against Israel. Additionally, the US has reportedly committed to facilitating discussions to establish a recognized border between the two nations.
Prior to September, Israel had been conducting a low-intensity campaign against Hezbollah, which escalated into significant actions, including the sabotage of thousands of the group's communication devices and a major bombing campaign in Lebanon, followed by a ground operation.
Netanyahu described the campaign as a success, asserting that Hezbollah has been considerably weakened since hostilities began, with “years of terror infrastructure” dismantled, as well as thousands of fighters and most of its leaders killed.
