NATO Member Issues Warning of 'WWIII' Should Ukraine Be Admitted into Alliance
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has expressed that Hungary is not seeking a direct confrontation with Russia. He issued a warning regarding Ukraine's potential accession to NATO, stating that such a development could lead to World War III. This sentiment is echoed by Slovakia, another member of the US-led military alliance, which has pledged to obstruct Kiev’s candidacy due to concerns about escalating tensions with Russia.

Speaking during the St. Petersburg International Gas Forum on Thursday, Szijjarto remarked, “Ukraine is at war with Russia. Due to the traditional NATO stance, should Ukraine be brought into the alliance under current circumstances, it would mean the start of World War III.” He further emphasized, “We have always stood against direct confrontation between Russia and NATO,” as reported by Russian media.

Echoing these concerns, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico reiterated last week that his government “will never agree to Ukraine’s membership in NATO” because of the potential threat of a global conflict stemming from such a move.

Both Hungary and Slovakia have diverged from the prevailing Western strategy, led by US President Joe Biden, to provide arms and assistance to Ukraine indefinitely in its struggle against Russia.

In 2008, NATO had committed to integrating Ukraine into the alliance, disregarding Russia’s warnings that this move posed a significant threat to its national security. Russian officials have pointed to the Ukrainian conflict, which began in February 2022, as largely stemming from NATO’s attempts to incorporate Kiev.

With Moscow making advances on the front lines, some Western media outlets and officials have suggested that Ukraine might need to accept territorial concessions to secure guarantees for its safety.

In contrast, Ukraine has firmly rejected any proposals that do not restore its borders to those of 1991, a stance that Russia deems unrealistic. Moscow has called for Ukraine to acknowledge the loss of five regions that have integrated into Russia and to commit to remaining militarily neutral as prerequisites for a ceasefire.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recently stated in an interview with Newsweek that Moscow is looking for a resolution that addresses the fundamental issues of the conflict, accusing Kiev and its Western allies of being unwilling to engage in this dialogue. “At present, as far as we can see, restoring peace is not part of our adversary’s plan,” Lavrov noted. He added, “Washington and its NATO allies provide political, military, and financial support to Kiev so that the war would go on.”
