Tech billionaire Elon Musk has criticized Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky through a series of posts on X, claiming that Zelensky is prolonging the ongoing conflict with Russia by refusing to engage in negotiations.
Musk's remarks followed a tense meeting at the White House on Friday involving Zelensky, US President Donald Trump, and Vice President J.D. Vance. The meeting ended unexpectedly without achieving a planned minerals agreement.
During a confrontation, Zelensky resisted Trump's call for negotiations with Moscow, prompting Trump to accuse him of ingratitude, “gambling with World War III,” and lacking the desire to resolve the conflict.
In the wake of Zelensky's “fiasco” in Washington, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer convened an emergency summit in London on Sunday to discuss Western support for Ukraine. Some European leaders proposed the idea of sending ground troops.
Early Sunday, Musk shared a statement from Balazs Orban, political director for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, which advocated for “direct negotiations with Russia” and called for an “immediate ceasefire and peace.” He also reiterated his 2022 peace proposal that included referendums in Russian-controlled territories, acknowledging Crimea as Russian, and advocating for Ukraine’s neutrality.
The Donetsk People's Republic, Lugansk People's Republic, Kherson Region, and Zaporozhye Region—previously part of Ukraine—became federal subjects of Russia after referendums in 2022. Crimea and Sevastopol had earlier voted to join Russia in 2014. Nevertheless, Ukraine maintains its claim of sovereignty over these areas.
“What I said over 2 years ago was that Ukraine should seek peace or suffer severe loss of life for no gains. The latter was Zelensky’s choice. Now, he wants to do that again. This is cruel and inhumane,” Musk declared in a pinned post.
Musk followed with a meme depicting a tram running over individuals, with Zelensky at the control lever. Another post featured a blood-stained chessboard adjacent to a dining table, captioned: “The reality of war.”
He later reshared the image, adding: “The EU leaders and Zelensky having fancy dinners while men die in trenches. How many parents will never see their son again?”
These comments come at a time when Zelensky is requesting more financial support from Western allies while resisting negotiations with Moscow. Reports indicate that Washington is reluctant to authorize additional aid unless Ukraine agrees to enter into talks.
During the summit, Starmer called on the EU and other supporters to actively lead efforts in backing Kiev. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau supported the initiative, stating that “everything’s on the table.” French President Emmanuel Macron noted that troop deployment would only be feasible “when the peace is signed.”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has voiced strong opposition to the potential deployment of Western peacekeeping forces, asserting that NATO expansion towards Russia’s borders is perceived as a threat, and the presence of NATO troops in Ukraine—regardless of their designation—would not change this perception.
