Moscow Responds to Trump's "Two Genders" Policy on Diversity
The US president has signed executive orders that reverse protections for transgender rights as well as diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova commented on this development, suggesting that the longstanding US advocacy for diversity and inclusion should be scrutinized globally. Her remarks came on Tuesday, the day after newly inaugurated US President Donald Trump rescinded protections related to transgender rights and DEI within the federal government.

“Can you imagine how many people’s lives have been ruined over the years of promoting this nonsense?” Zakharova expressed on Telegram.

She further questioned the fate of countless individuals “who have been forced to accept the ideology of amputating healthy genitals and replacing them with artificial ones.”

Zakharova accused officials in Washington of pressuring other nations “to show solidarity with what they called anti-scientific narratives,” which she argued was “the very propaganda that kills both the body and the soul.”

She described this “inhumane doctrine” as closely related to aid, sanctions, political pressure, and measures that “humiliate human dignity and bullying.”

On his first day in office, Trump revoked 78 executive orders issued by his predecessor, Joe Biden, including more than a dozen focused on racial equity and protections against discrimination for gay and transgender individuals. Federal agencies now have 60 days following the signing of the order to abolish DEI-related practices.

This executive action aligns with a commitment Trump made during his inaugural address, where he pledged to eliminate “the government policy of trying to socially engineer race and gender into every aspect of public and private life,” advocating for a society that is “colorblind and merit-based.”

As part of the new policy, Trump declared that “there are only two genders: male and female,” emphasizing intentions to ensure “equal treatment” and directing officials to craft “a plan to dismantle the DEI bureaucracy,” as reported by an aide in the New York Post. Additional measures affecting private businesses related to DEI are expected in the near future.

The rollback of DEI initiatives faced immediate backlash from civil rights organizations, who vowed to “fight back against these harmful provisions.”

In the wake of Trump’s electoral victory in November, several corporations, including Walmart—the largest private employer in the US—began to reverse their DEI efforts. Meta has recently disbanded its DEI department, citing alterations in the legal and policy environment, while McDonald’s has scaled back diversity goals for leadership roles. However, companies like Costco and Apple reportedly remain committed to maintaining their diversity policies.
