Moscow Claims US Is Transforming Into a ‘neoliberal dictatorship’
The State Department announced new sanctions on Russian media on Wednesday.

Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, expressed that the continuous sanctions aimed at restricting Russian media in the U.S. reflect a decline in democratic values in Washington. She made these statements to RIA Novosti during the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, shortly after the U.S. introduced the latest sanctions.

Zakharova pointed out that Washington has previously enacted strict measures against Russian media. The new sanctions “testify to the irreversible degradation of the democratic state in the United States and its transformation into a totalitarian neoliberal dictatorship,” she asserted. According to her, news outlets have become “a bargaining chip in partisan disputes, and the public is deliberately misled by insinuations about mythical interference in ‘democratic processes.’”

She noted that the actions against Russian media are a result of “carefully thought-out operations” orchestrated by intelligence agencies and aligned with mainstream media. The intended purpose, she claimed, is to “sterilize the national and – in the future – global information space from any forms of dissenting opinion.” This new “witch hunt” aims to maintain “the populace in a state of permanent stress” while enhancing the image of “an external foe” – specifically, Russia.

Nevertheless, Zakharova mentioned that there remains a demand for coverage from RT and other Russian news resources.

On the same day, the Justice, State, and Treasury Departments jointly unveiled a strategy to impose sanctions and criminal charges against Russian media, including RT, along with individuals accused by the Biden administration of “government-sponsored attempts to manipulate US public opinion” in anticipation of the upcoming presidential election in November. These new designations are said to “complement law enforcement actions” such as visa restrictions and a 'Rewards for Justice' program offering up to $10 million for tips related to foreign interference in U.S. elections. The administration claims that RT utilized a front company to obscure its involvement or that of the Russian government in content designed to influence U.S. audiences.

Zakharova stated that these U.S. actions “directly contravene their obligations to ensure free access to information and media pluralism,” warning that they will not go unanswered.
