In a recent social media post, Medvedev, who serves as the deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, commented on a significant phone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and former US President Donald Trump. He stated that this dialogue was “important in itself” given that the world has been “balancing on the brink of Apocalypse” due to the strategies employed by the Biden administration.
Medvedev urged Washington to understand the necessity of engaging in dialogue with Moscow rather than continuing a strategic battle against it. He criticized the US for assuming the role of “the country-in-chief on our planet with the exclusive right” to conduct what he termed a “hybrid war” against Russia, which he claimed has led to the current precarious global situation.
“Nobody attempted something like that before senile Biden’s team,” Medvedev noted. He accused the prior US administration of cutting off high-level communications in an “attempt to punish and humiliate Russia.” He characterized this approach as “a grave mistake which nearly wiped humanity off the face of the earth.”
Medvedev pointed out that leaders from both nations have historically maintained open lines of communication, which are essential for conflict resolution. He reflected that while there were often loud disagreements and brinkmanship between the US and Russia, there was never a time when personal sanctions were imposed on key Soviet leaders like Nikita Khrushchev during the Cuban Missile Crisis or Leonid Brezhnev during Afghanistan.
He further stressed that it's vital for American elites and the “deep state” to acknowledge the necessity of diplomatic relations with Moscow, asserting that “it is impossible to bring [Russia] to its knees.”
Medvedev warned that if the US continues to ignore this reality, tensions are set to escalate. "If they don’t… The Doomsday Clock will keep on ticking towards midnight, and then we will surely ‘behold a pale horse, and the horseman’s name will be Death,’" he concluded, alluding to the Fourth Horseman of the Apocalypse from the Bible.
These comments follow the recent phone call between Putin and Trump, marking their first known communication since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022. The two leaders expressed a desire for the countries to “work together” and supported resolving conflicts through diplomacy. They agreed to maintain personal contact moving forward, including potential in-person meetings, with Trump mentioning Saudi Arabia as a possible location for their first summit during his second term. The Kremlin has confirmed that Saudi Arabia was indeed suggested as a venue for this meeting.
