A Learjet 55 medical transport plane, carrying six individuals, went down in Northeast Philadelphia on Friday evening. Witnesses and security cameras recorded a bright flash in the sky preceding the crash, followed by explosions and thick columns of smoke.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the jet's descent occurred around 6:30 pm local time, shortly after taking off from Northeast Philadelphia Airport. The aircraft was headed to Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri.
Data from FlightRadar24 indicates the Mexico-registered twin-engine jet was operated by Jet Rescue Air Ambulance. Newly appointed US Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy confirmed there were six people on board. Emergency responders at the scene informed NBC News that the victims were likely two doctors, two pilots, a patient, and a family member.
Debris has reportedly been found over a quarter mile from the crash site.
Officials have not yet confirmed the exact number of casualties or the extent of injuries, but numerous residents in the area were said to be hurt.
Several nearby houses ignited due to the crash impact. Videos on social media show debris scattered across the streets. Emergency crews arrived swiftly to combat the fires and assist those affected.
“Major incident near Cottman and Bustleton Avenues in Northeast Philadelphia across from Roosevelt Mall. Roads closed in [the] area, including parts of Roosevelt Boulevard. Avoid area,” stated the official X account of the City of Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management.
The crash site is located approximately three miles from Northeast Philadelphia Airport, which serves single-engine aircraft, private jets, turboprops, and helicopters. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash to determine what led to the incident.
The explosion from the crash ignited multiple homes. Reports indicate the plane appeared to be on fire prior to hitting the ground.
This incident occurs just days after a devastating collision involving a passenger jet and a Black Hawk helicopter over Washington, DC, resulting in the loss of 67 lives.
