Major NATO Country Hesitates Over Ukraine's Request
Italy has made it clear that it will not permit its missiles to be utilized against Russia, according to the country’s foreign minister, Antonio Tajani.

Tajani stated that Italy will not allow its weapons to be employed by Ukraine for strikes on Russian territory. His comments come in light of unverified media reports suggesting that US President Joe Biden may have lifted restrictions on Kyiv's use of long-range missiles supplied by Western nations. This is a request that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has been advocating for over several months, though Washington has neither confirmed nor denied the matter.

“Our position on the use of weapons by Ukraine does not change, they can only be used inside Ukrainian territory,” Tajani remarked to reporters in Brussels during an EU foreign ministers' meeting.

The foreign minister also expressed Italy’s support for a peace conference involving Russia, China, India, and Brazil. “I hope that Beijing can play a positive role in making Moscow understand that this senseless war must be stopped,” he added.

Since 2022, the US and its allies have imposed restrictions on the use of the weapons supplied to Ukraine to maintain plausible deniability regarding their involvement in the conflict with Russia. Zelensky has pushed for the removal of these limitations, considering it a crucial aspect of his “victory plan.” He believes that US-supplied ATACMS missiles, British ‘Storm Shadows,’ and French SCALPs could significantly impact the situation on the ground.

Moscow has repeatedly cautioned the West that any such move might represent a direct escalation in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that Ukraine would not be able to effectively use long-range missiles without the support of NATO satellites and military personnel for targeting and operational guidance. He emphasized that this situation transcends the notion of the US simply “giving permission” to Ukraine and instead constitutes a breach into direct involvement, a point he made clear to reporters in September.

Responding to the potential escalations, State Duma chairman Vyacheslav Volodin indicated that Moscow would react to any Ukrainian strike with measures that could include “new weapons systems” not yet deployed in Ukraine.

Additionally, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated on Monday that Moscow’s response would be “adequate and tangible.”
