Major Development: China Unveils First PC Operating System with AI Features
China unveiled its inaugural domestically developed operating system for personal computers (PC) featuring integrated artificial intelligence (AI) on Thursday. This release marks a significant advancement in enhancing edge-side inference capabilities within the nation's operating system sector.
Introduced at the 2024 China Operating System Industry Conference in Beijing, the AI-powered PC (AIPC) edition of the Kylin operating system addresses a previously unmet need for edge-side inference capabilities within the domestic operating system sector.
Operating systems serve as the crucial layer that connects high-level software ecosystems to the fundamental hardware resources, facilitating the operation of AI-driven algorithms, models, and applications.
One of the standout features of the AIPC Kylin operating system is its ability to perform edge-side inference, integrating hardware and software to enable the execution of complex AI operations locally, rather than depending on cloud services. This capability enhances the processing speed and security of data, and also dramatically changes the interaction between users and their computers.
Zhu Chen, Vice General Manager at Kylinsoft, emphasized the importance of these developments in edge-side inference capabilities. "This enhancement not only safeguards user privacy, but also improves the user experience, ultimately boosting productivity and creativity," Zhu said.
The new AIPC operating system finds utility across various sectors including transportation, healthcare, and education. Within autonomous vehicles, it processes sensor input in real time to aid navigation and control mechanisms. In the medical field, it supports tasks from image analysis to genetic research. Educational applications of the AIPC system include delivering customized learning materials and tutoring, aimed at increasing learning effectiveness and outcomes.
Historically, the development of global operating systems has predominantly been led by European and American companies, with China entering the space later and under considerable pressure to advance rapidly.
Nevertheless, the acceleration of AI technologies has opened new avenues for Chinese operating system development. Data from 2023 shows a significant 17.4 percent increase in China’s platform software market, reaching a value of approximately 81.66 billion yuan (around $11.3 billion), and a 23.2 percent growth in the operating system market.
"The growth in the operating system market is largely driven by server operating systems. This is due in part to the increasing demand from industry-wide digital transformation, and in part to the additional demand generated by the expansion of AI servers," noted Gao Dan, Assistant President of CCID Consulting Co., Ltd.
