In a recent statement, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei described Hamas's surprise attack on Israel last year as a “logical and legal” move toward defeating the “malicious and cowardly” Zionist regime. During his first public sermon in nearly five years on Friday, Khamenei defended the actions of the ‘axis of resistance,’ which comprises Hezbollah and Hamas.
Monday marks the one-year anniversary of Israel's military operation in Gaza, initiated in response to Hamas's unexpected strike in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,100 fatalities and over 200 hostages taken. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, Israel's campaign has led to the deaths of more than 41,000 Palestinians following a prolonged blockade of the enclave.
As tensions escalate between Israel and neighboring Muslim nations during the Gaza operation, support for Hamas and Palestine has surged from both Iran and Hezbollah. Earlier this month, the conflict escalated further when Israel began a ground operation in Lebanon, prompting Iran to carry out a significant missile attack on Israel this week.
Khamenei stated in his sermon that Palestinians, like “every people,” possess “the right to defend their land, their home, their country, and their interests against aggressors,” a stance he asserted was “supported by international law.” He emphasized that “those who help” Palestinians are simply fulfilling their obligations. He stated, “This is the rule of Islam, the rule of reason, and international and global logic. The Palestinians are defending their land; their defense is legitimate, and helping them is also logical and legal.”
In support of Iran's missile strike on Israel, Khamenei referred to it as “the minimum punishment for the usurping and bloodthirsty Zionist regime… whose only achievement has been to bomb homes, schools, hospitals and civilian gathering centers” in Gaza.
He further proclaimed that Iran “will perform any duty required” to ensure Israel's defeat and claimed that West Jerusalem has only managed to “survive” due to the backing of its Western allies. Khamenei remarked, “This regime acts like rabid wolves and raging dogs of America in the region. This malicious and cowardly entity has barely kept itself afloat thanks to America’s support, and it will not last long.”
Khamenei underscored that the primary issue in the Middle East is foreign interference, asserting that “the countries of the region are capable of establishing security and peace” if allowed to do so. He criticized the United States for its involvement and support for West Jerusalem, arguing that the US has never sought peace in the region, but aims to use Israel as a means to seize natural resources and involve them in major global conflicts.
