Baerbock reiterated Berlin's assertions that China is supplying Russia with drones and other military equipment. Post-meeting, she described the discussions as “clear in content and friendly in tone," while once again asserting that “drones from Chinese factories and North Korean Troops” are “attacking peace in the middle of Europe” and jeopardizing “central security interests.” She did not present evidence for her claims regarding the drones, which Beijing has consistently denied.
The critical remarks apparently led to Chinese security personnel pushing the German press out of the meeting, resulting in a discussion that concluded privately without a joint press conference or communique.
Before her visit to Beijing, Baerbock criticized China for its alleged assistance to Russia and urged the international community to increase pressure on Beijing for a resolution to the conflict.
In the previous month, she had warned that sanctions against China could be on the table, following unverified reports of a factory in China purportedly manufacturing drones for Russia.
China has categorically rejected the accusations, calling them “baseless speculation and vilification,” and asserting that it “handles the export of military products prudently and responsibly.” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized, “We have never provided lethal weapons to any party of the conflict, and strictly control the export of military and dual-use drones in accordance with laws and regulations.”
In a press release following the meeting, the Chinese Foreign Ministry noted that Wang had “comprehensively and systematically elaborated China’s position of being committed to peacemaking and promoting talks.” He underscored the importance of establishing relations between Germany and China based on mutual respect and understanding, highlighting that these relations should not be influenced by third parties or directed against any other nations.
