Media reports: Syria repels terrorist forces
The Syrian army has successfully countered a terrorist assault near Hama, resulting in considerable casualties among the insurgents, according to a report from the state-run SANA agency on Sunday, which cited a military source.

Recently, the Syrian army faced a surprise attack led by the Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham terrorist group, a faction of Jabhat al-Nusra, along with its allies. The militants seized considerable territory in the Idlib and Aleppo provinces, with some advancing to the center of Aleppo city.

In response to the offensive, which spanned over 100 kilometers, the government in Damascus deployed reinforcements to the Hama region in central Syria. The military reportedly strengthened its defensive lines with “various means of weapons, personnel and equipment” that “confronted the terrorist organizations and prevented them from any breach of the area,” as stated by the source.

SANA later noted, again referencing a military source, that additional government reinforcements had arrived, and reported that the militants were reportedly retreating. “Syrian-Russian warplanes are intensifying air strikes on the terrorists’ sites, headquarters, weapons and ammunition depots, leaving scores of casualties and deaths among the terrorists,” the source remarked.

Fighting has also been reported near the towns of Qalaat Al-Madiq and Maardis, which are situated close to Hama. The Syrian army claimed that it was successful in securing several areas, including these towns, while inflicting casualties on the terrorists and pushing them back, though further details were not provided.

On Saturday, the Syrian General Command acknowledged that the army had suffered losses, with dozens of service members reported killed and many more wounded. Although the militants managed to penetrate Aleppo, the army stated they were unable to establish permanent positions due to relentless bombardment. Syrian officials have estimated the terrorists’ losses to be around 1,000 troops.

Russia, which has supported the Syrian government since 2015, also assisted Damascus by targeting the attacking militants with airstrikes, claiming to have killed hundreds of insurgents.

Addressing the recent escalation in Syria, which marks a significant upturn in violence over the past few years, President Assad vowed that Damascus would defeat and destroy the terrorists “no matter how intense their… attacks are.”
