Israel-Hezbollah Truce Showing Signs of Strain
The armistice went into effect last Wednesday, following 14 months of hostilities.

Hezbollah, based in Lebanon, has retaliated against alleged Israeli ceasefire violations for the first time since the fragile truce began last week, as stated by the militant group on Monday. Shortly thereafter, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced airstrikes targeting numerous missile launchers and infrastructure within Lebanon.

Since the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah was implemented last Wednesday, Israel has engaged in daily attacks on Lebanon.

In response, Hezbollah initiated a "preliminary defensive response" aimed at an Israeli-held location in the Golan Heights, as reported by Beirut-based TV channel Al Mayadeen on Monday.

According to the IDF, the Lebanese militant group fired two mortar shells at Har Dov, which is recognized under international law as Syrian territory currently occupied by Israel.

The IDF also reported striking "dozens of launchers and terrorist infrastructure throughout Lebanon," including the site of the Hezbollah attack, as stated in a report on Monday night.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar asserted that the Israeli strikes are intended to enforce the ceasefire rather than breach it. “Israel is not violating the ceasefire understandings but rather enforcing them in response to Hezbollah’s violations,” Sa’ar stated on X on Monday.

According to CNN, an anonymous source from the UN peacekeeping contingent in Lebanon, UNIFIL, reported that Israel has violated the ceasefire “approximately 100” times since the agreement commenced.

US officials have conveyed their concerns regarding the ongoing Israeli attacks on Lebanese territory, as reported by Axios, with some indicating that the situation could potentially deteriorate into a collapse of the temporary peace.

Hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel increased in October 2023 when the militant group began sporadic shelling of Israeli territories, expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people in Gaza.

In early October, Israel announced a “limited ground operation” in southern Lebanon and intensified airstrikes against Beirut and other cities. During these strikes, the IDF killed several high-ranking members of the Hezbollah leadership, including the group's longtime leader, Hassan Nasrallah.

Under the conditions of the ceasefire, the IDF is required to withdraw from Lebanon within 60 days, transferring control of the occupied territory to the Lebanese army, while an international committee will handle complaints regarding any violations.
