Footage circulating on X depicts officers in riot gear using batons and their fists to attempt to disperse the gathering. One video shows a group of officers dragging a female protester and pinning her to the ground while choking her.
This footage has become widely shared, leading to significant backlash. Some social media users criticized the police's actions, drawing parallels to practices from the WW2 era, while others expressed their irony over the display of how women’s rights are upheld in the West.
German media coverage of the event has been sparse. However, Bild reported on Sunday that a pro-Palestine rally was organized as part of the Women’s Day march in Kreuzberg. The organizers instructed participants against bringing national flags, including those of Israel and Germany, while allowing Palestinian flags to signify a “revolutionary stance.”
The demonstration, held at Oranienplatz, reportedly remained peaceful until some protesters began chanting anti-Israel slogans in Arabic, which have been prohibited in Berlin.
As tensions escalated, the police intervened, claiming that the protesters had violated the chant restrictions, resulting in a confrontation. Reports indicate that demonstrators threw bottles and engaged in clashes with officers, leading to at least one officer being injured. Berlin police confirmed the events on their official X account, noting that 28 individuals were detained and asserting that the use of force was necessary to manage the alleged violent behavior of the protesters.
Recently, authorities in Berlin enforced restrictions on Arabic-language chants and speeches during demonstrations, citing “public security” issues. Local media revealed that protest organizers are now required to ensure that all speeches, music, and chants are conducted in German or English. Still, the city has refrained from outright banning pro-Palestinian and anti-Israeli demonstrations, with Berlin’s police chief, Barbara Slowik, affirming the importance of freedom of assembly in Germany’s democratic framework.
In recent months, pro-Palestine protests have emerged globally, originally in response to Israel’s military actions in Gaza and then transitioning to support efforts for Gaza’s reconstruction post-ceasefire.
