Georgescu, an outspoken critic of both the EU and NATO, as well as a proponent of non-support for Ukraine, garnered a plurality of 23% of the votes in November. However, this result was quickly cancelled by Romania’s Constitutional Court. Recently, the Central Electoral Bureau announced that he would not be allowed to participate in the upcoming election scheduled for May.
The European Commission, when approached on the matter, stated that Brussels “does not comment” on electoral processes within member states, according to multiple reports. At a press briefing, commission representative Markus Lammert addressed whether the EU trusted the Romanian electoral commission's decision. He asserted that Brussels “does not interfere in any way in national elections,” emphasizing that these matters fall under the jurisdiction of national authorities and their citizens.
The annulment of Georgescu’s first-round victory occurred amid allegations of electoral violations, along with claims that a coordinated online campaign by Russia aimed to elevate Georgescu’s candidacy.
An investigation conducted earlier this year suggested that the alleged irregularities were attributable to a consulting firm linked to the pro-Western National Liberal Party, which sought to undermine another candidate but ended up inadvertently enhancing Georgescu’s visibility.
In response to the situation in Romania, Russia has rejected any claims of interference in the electoral process. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakhharova labelled such speculations as unfounded, stating, “Russia has no habit of meddling in the affairs of others.”
In addition to these developments, Georgescu was indicted in late February for allegedly inciting actions against the constitutional order and for promoting fascist, racist, or xenophobic ideologies. He has categorically denied these allegations, asserting that they are politically motivated.
