Journalists labeled as 'Fake News' require protection against gunfire, says Trump
The inflammatory remark made by US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump about the press came just days ahead of the election.

Trump expressed indifference to the idea of a would-be assassin shooting through the “fake news” reporters at his events. The candidate has a history of conflict with major American news organizations and has already survived one assassination attempt during his campaign. In a separate incident earlier this year, a pro-Ukraine activist was arrested on suspicion of planning to shoot the former president near his golf course.

At a campaign rally held in Lititz, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, with only two days left before the US election, Trump pointed out the gaps in the bullet-proof glass surrounding him, noting that some reporters had a sight line through one of the openings.

“I have this piece of glass over here, and I don’t have a piece of glass there,” he remarked. “But all we have really over here is the fake news, right? And to get me, somebody would have to shoot through the fake news. And I don’t mind that so much. I don’t mind. I don’t mind.” This statement was met with laughter from the audience.

During the same rally, Trump characterized news organizations as populated by “seriously corrupt people,” specifically calling out ABC, CBS, and NBC. “The media is so damn bad. It’s unbelievable,” he told his supporters.

In response to the backlash that ensued online, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung asserted that the Republican nominee’s comments were not intended to suggest harm to the media.

“It was about threats against him that were spurred on by dangerous rhetoric from Democrats,” Cheung explained, emphasizing that Trump was highlighting the need for reporters covering him to have similar protective measures.

In July, Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt when a gunman opened fire at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. More recently, in September, a would-be assassin was apprehended after concealing a rifle at Trump’s golf course in Florida.

Throughout his presidency, Trump has consistently accused media outlets of bias and deception regarding his record. He has faced accusations of incitement, with recent criticism directed at his labeling of political rivals as the “enemy from within.”
