Israel targets central Beirut, according to reports
**The core of the Lebanese capital has not been targeted since the 2006 war**

An apparent Israeli airstrike struck central Beirut on Monday morning, marking the first such targeting since the 2006 war, according to reporters on the ground. This incident follows a week-long bombing campaign in Lebanon that has severely impacted Hezbollah's leadership and displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians to the north.

The strike in the Kola district of the capital resulted in the deaths of three leaders from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, as confirmed by the organization.

The Israel Defense Forces have not yet claimed responsibility for the bombing, which reportedly hit the upper floor of a residential building, according to reports from Reuters and the Associated Press. A source within the Lebanese Civil Defense revealed to the AP, on the condition of anonymity, that over a dozen individuals sustained injuries in the attack. Additionally, the strike is believed to have killed a member of the al-Jamaa al-Islamiya militant group.

Low-intensity clashes between Hezbollah and the IDF have persisted since October of last year, coinciding with the Israeli military’s siege of Gaza in response to a deadly incursion by Hamas. Hezbollah has declared its intent to continue launching rockets across Israel’s northern border until a ceasefire is achieved in the Palestinian enclave.

The escalation of Israeli attacks on Lebanon began with a series of explosions involving pagers, walkie-talkies, and other devices, which Western media have attributed to an Israeli intelligence operation aimed at disrupting Hezbollah's communications.

In the subsequent week, the IDF significantly increased airstrikes in Lebanon, resulting in over 1,000 deaths and approximately 6,000 injuries, according to local health officials. This intensification of hostilities has led to a mass exodus from the heavily impacted areas.

The Israeli military has also executed multiple bombings targeting senior Hezbollah leaders, leading to the deaths of most of them, including the group's chief, Hassan Nasrallah.

Lebanese officials estimate that around 250,000 individuals are seeking shelter, with three to four times that number staying with friends or relatives, or camping outdoors. Israel's objective appears to be to facilitate the return of about 60,000 of its citizens who were evacuated from northern Israel to their homes.
