Israel detains US journalist following report on Iranian attack
Independent American journalist Jeremy Loffredo has been detained in the West Bank and has reportedly been charged with “aiding the enemy during wartime” due to his reporting on the Iranian attack.

On October 1, Iran retaliated against Israel, launching a series of missile strikes aimed at military bases and facilities, which followed the deaths of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders. Israeli authorities imposed a ban on reports concerning the extent of the damage caused by these attacks.

“I realize many Americans have a deep, overarching, unyielding love for the foreign country of Israel, but Jeremy Loffredo is an American and a journalist, being imprisoned with no trial by Israel for his reporting. Maybe he deserves some consideration, too?” remarked Glenn Greenwald, a journalist based in Brazil, as he underscored Loffredo’s situation on Thursday.

Loffredo has contributed to the US-based outlet Grayzone. Max Blumenthal, the editor of Grayzone, stated that Loffredo’s phone was confiscated following his arrest by the Israeli military. Wyatt Reed, a colleague of Blumenthal's, reported that Loffredo had been “beaten, blindfolded, and taken to an Israeli military base.”

The Israeli news outlet Ynet confirmed that Loffredo has been charged with “aiding the enemy during wartime and providing information to the enemy.”

“Israel is detaining and prosecuting an American journalist for doing journalism. Will his media colleagues defend him?” asked Aaron Mate, also from Grayzone, on social media platform X.

In his final video report from Israel, Loffredo showcased footage filmed by Israelis and Arab Bedouins, which allegedly displayed the aftermath of at least ten Iranian missiles hitting the Nevatim airbase in the Negev. Some Bedouins showed Loffredo missile debris that had not been cleared away by the Israeli military.

Loffredo proceeded to Tel Aviv, where he pinpointed the location of an Iranian missile strike that occurred “less than 1,000 feet” from the Mossad headquarters, situated in a residential neighborhood. His profile on X has since been locked.

In March 2023, following the arrest of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich on espionage charges in Russia, the US government quickly labeled him as “wrongfully detained.” President Joe Biden and numerous major media outlets emphasized that “journalism is not a crime” and called for his swift release. The State Department and the US embassy in Israel have not yet responded to news of Loffredo’s arrest.

After Gershkovich was later exchanged for several Russians held in the West, Moscow released video evidence capturing the American with a flash drive containing classified information regarding Russian weapon production.
