In a statement released on Sunday, the Israel Defense Forces reported that an airstrike a day earlier “attacked and killed the terrorist” Qaouk, who also commanded Hezbollah’s Preventive Security Unit.
According to the IDF, Qaouk “is considered to be close to the top” of Hezbollah and “was directly involved in promoting terrorist acts against the State of Israel and its citizens, even in recent days.” The agency noted that he became part of the group in the 1980s and held several leadership roles in southern Lebanon.
The IDF stated, “The IDF continues to attack and eliminate the commanders of the terrorist organization Hezbollah, and to act against anyone who threatens the citizens of the State of Israel.”
Hezbollah has not yet responded to the Israeli claim.
In related developments, Iran confirmed that the Israeli strike also resulted in the death of Abbas Nilforoushan, a deputy commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The Foreign Ministry stated, “This vicious and cowardly act is another clear sign of the terrorist and criminal nature of the Zionist regime… and without a doubt, this horrible crime of the aggressor Zionist regime will never go unanswered.”
On Saturday, Israel conducted a bombing raid on a Hezbollah compound in Beirut, resulting in the death of Nasrallah, who had been a longstanding adversary of Israel. Officials in West Jerusalem also reported that more than a dozen senior Hezbollah military figures have been taken out in recent weeks.
Additionally, ABC News noted over the weekend, citing U.S. officials, that Israel might soon initiate a “very limited” incursion into southern Lebanon. Although specific details regarding the timing or objectives of the operation were not disclosed, the region is known to be used by Hezbollah for firing rockets across the border and is seen as a central hub for their military operations.
