Khamenei alleged Israel's transparency in its offensive operations across various regions including Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, and Syria. "Today, the Zionist regime commits crimes shamelessly and without hiding it,” he was quoted as saying by an X account.
Amidst his vehement critique, he particularly emphasized the impact on non-combatants: "They aren’t fighting soldiers. They’re targeting ordinary people."
Khamenei's solution was clear: “Today, the first step to increasing the unity of the Islamic world against this criminal, terrorist gang that has usurped the land of Palestine is for Islamic countries to completely cut off economic ties with it. This is the least that can be done.”
This call to action comes against the backdrop of increased hostilities following the Israeli response to Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, which resulted in significant Israeli casualties and hostages. The repercussions of Israel's retaliatory strikes in Gaza have been catastrophic, displacing 90% of the population, according to the UN.
Iran has condemned these actions as genocidal, and relations between the countries deteriorated further following the attack on an Iranian Embassy compound in Syria by Israel and subsequent events including the assassination of a Hamas leader in Tehran, which both Hamas and Iran attribute to Israeli involvement.
