Tehran has marked the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas as a victory for the Palestinian people and their allies, although it issued a warning that Israel might not uphold its commitments.
Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei stated on X: “The patience of the people of Gaza and the steadfastness of the Palestinian resistance forced the Zionist regime to retreat.”
The truce, announced on Wednesday, follows 15 months of conflict ignited by a deadly raid in October 2023 by Hamas. The violence has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths, predominantly in Gaza. The agreement, set to take effect on Sunday, includes provisions for the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has proclaimed the truce as “a clear victory” for Palestinians. In a Wednesday statement, it asserted that Israel's failure to achieve its military objectives and the losses it has incurred compelled the state to negotiate the agreement.
While the Iranian military acknowledged that Israel has caused considerable harm to its adversaries, including the targeted killings of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders, it maintained that these factions continue their operations.
The IRGC warned that Israel may violate the ceasefire, urging its foes to remain vigilant “to confront new wars and crimes.” It also called for a mass prayer at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem to commemorate the truce.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed appreciation to US President-elect Donald Trump for his role in facilitating the agreement, and he also thanked outgoing President Joe Biden for his support, as stated in an official release.
The ceasefire was brokered during talks mediated by Qatar in Doha, with Netanyahu’s office indicating that some details are still pending finalization.
