Huckabee Named US Ambassador to Israel

Huckabee Named US Ambassador to Israel
President-elect Donald Trump revealed on Tuesday that he intends to nominate Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor, for the position of United States ambassador to Israel.

“Mike has been a great public servant, Governor, and Leader in Faith for many years,” Trump stated. “He loves Israel, and the people of Israel, and likewise, the people of Israel love him. Mike will work tirelessly to bring about Peace in the Middle East!”

Huckabee’s potential appointment marks a significant move, placing a foreign policy newcomer in one of the most critical and delicate diplomatic roles within the U.S. government. Although Huckabee has never held a diplomatic or national security position in any U.S. administration, he has met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and was reportedly considered for the leading diplomatic role in Israel back in 2016.

A strong advocate of Israel, Huckabee has consistently linked his support for the U.S. ally to his evangelical beliefs. He has backed the Israeli government's initiatives to expand settlements in the West Bank and has expressed opposition to efforts aimed at achieving a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. In June, he remarked that the U.S. has “no valid reason” to support a deal between the two parties.

Under Huckabee's potential leadership, Palestinians may not expect an increase in U.S. advocacy for their cause. During his 2008 presidential campaign, he stated that "there's really no such thing as a Palestinian," and he reiterated similar views in a 2015 interview with The Washington Post, claiming that the notion of a long-standing Palestinian history is not accurate.

It appears unlikely that Huckabee will encounter significant challenges during the confirmation process. Having previously hosted a Fox News show and being the father of rising GOP star and Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, he is expected to encounter minimal opposition from fellow Republicans.

Huckabee’s nomination follows Trump’s recent announcements of various national security and diplomatic cabinet appointments. On Monday, he declared that Rep. Mike Waltz would serve as his national security adviser and Rep. Elise Stefanik would be nominated as the ambassador to the United Nations. Additionally, he is expected to announce Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, a potential running mate, as the Trump administration's Secretary of State. Like Huckabee, each of these individuals is regarded as a supporter of Israel.
