Hong Kong Welcomes Birth of Panda Twins
On Thursday morning, the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) announced the arrival of panda twins in Hong Kong.
The two cubs, one female and one male, are offspring of Ying Ying and Le Le, pandas gifted to Hong Kong by the central government in 2007. Earlier this year, in March, Ying Ying and Le Le achieved natural mating at Ocean Park.
After a gestation period of five months, female giant panda Ying Ying welcomed the twins at 2:05 a.m. and 3:27 a.m. on Thursday.
A dedicated team of animal care professionals, in collaboration with experts from the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, are providing round-the-clock care for Ying Ying and the newborn twins until their conditions are fully stabilized, as stated by the Information Services Department of the HKSAR government.
Ying Ying and Le Le were the second pair of pandas given as gifts from the central government to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China. The first pair, An An and Jia Jia, was presented in 1999.
Jia Jia, the female giant panda who became renowned for being the oldest living panda in captivity, passed away in 2016 at the age of 38. An An died in 2022 at the age of 35. Both Ying Ying and Le Le were born in 2005.
John Lee, the chief executive of the HKSAR, expressed his sincere gratitude to the central government for the pandas, emphasizing that it reflects the central government’s care and support for the HKSAR.
Lee also extended his thanks to the Ocean Park team for their diligent care of the two pairs of giant pandas throughout the years, and praised the professional assistance from the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, which contributed to the successful birth of the twin cubs.
