Heat waves have been gripping Chile in recent days, leading to the issuance of extreme heat alerts in six regions of the South American country.
The meteorological department in Chile has issued alerts for extreme heat in six regions, including Coquimbo, Valparaiso and O'Higgins.
The temperature in the Chilean capital Santiago reached 37.3 degrees Celsius on Thursday, the third highest temperature recorded in January since 1912.
Meteorological experts have predicted that the heat will persist in Chile for a minimum of five consecutive days, an occurrence that is uncommon for the country.
"It is extremely hot. It wasn't like this before, and now I find the heat is nearly unbearable," said Carlos Fredes, a local resident.
To help people cope with the hot weather, many cities in Chile have installed drinking fountains in parks and sunshades at bus stations.
"The sunshades have played a crucial role. We are fortunate that the government has installed drinking fountains, allowing us to wash our faces and hair to cool down," said Edith Calderon, a ticket inspector at a bus station.
"We call on people to avoid exposure to high temperatures by staying in cool places and seeking shade during the hottest hours between 11:00 and 17:00. It is crucial to stay well hydrated as it helps prevent dehydration," said Christian Garcia, head of the epidemiology department of the Chilean Ministry of Health.
