Earlier reports indicated that the Palestinian group had agreed to release Liri Albag, 19, Karina Ariev, 20, Danielle Gilboa, 20, and Naama Levy, 20. All four individuals were part of a surveillance unit captured at the Nahal Oz military base near Gaza during Hamas' surprise attack on October 7, 2023.
Footage from Palestine Square in Gaza City showed Red Cross representatives on stage signing what appeared to be exchange documents with Hamas officials. Shortly thereafter, the Israeli hostages made a brief appearance on the platform, escorted by armed guards in masks, before being taken to Red Cross vehicles and driven away.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the release, stating, “the Red Cross has communicated that four Israeli hostages were transferred to them and are on their way toward” the military positions in Gaza. The IDF later mentioned that the captives had been handed over without incident and requested that everyone “respect the privacy of the returning hostages and their families.”
Israeli officials indicated that the female soldiers would be taken to a military medical facility for an initial checkup before being transferred to a hospital to reunite with their families.
Meanwhile, Hamas has provided a list of 200 Palestinian prisoners expected to be freed by Israel as part of the exchange. According to Al Jazeera, 121 of these prisoners were serving life sentences.
Earlier this month, Israel and Hamas finalized a ceasefire agreement aimed at ending their 15-month conflict, which has caused significant devastation in Gaza. The deal, facilitated by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, consists of three phases. In the initial stage, Hamas is expected to release 33 hostages—including children, female soldiers, and those who are wounded or sick—in exchange for an unspecified number of Palestinians.
The following phases will involve the release of the remaining male civilians and soldiers held by Hamas and the return of the remains of deceased captives from both sides.
