Elon Musk, the owner of X and a close ally of Donald Trump, has expressed interest in possibly acquiring the liberal cable news channel MSNBC. This comes amid speculation that its parent company, Comcast, is contemplating a sale due to its dwindling ratings.
On Wednesday, Comcast disclosed plans to spin off several of its networks, including USA Network, CNBC, and MSNBC, into a new media holding company named SpinCo. Although the company characterized this move as beneficial, asserting that the new holding would be "well-capitalized," "ideally positioned for success," and "highly attractive to investors," various media outlets have suggested a more troubling scenario.
According to a report from the New York Post, an insider at MSNBC revealed that the network’s employees are experiencing "panic because everything is up in the air." There are discussions among executives about potentially changing the network’s name, logo, and even relocating its headquarters.
The latest Nielsen ratings indicate that MSNBC's daily viewership has dropped by 38% since Trump’s victory over Democrat Kamala Harris in the presidential election. CNN has also experienced viewer losses, with a 27% decline when compared to pre-election figures, according to Nielsen.
In light of the ongoing speculation regarding MSNBC's future, Donald Trump Jr. tagged Musk on X, sharing an image of the MSNBC logo with the caption "For Sale, Best Offer" and commenting that he had just thought of "the funniest idea ever." Musk replied with curiosity, asking: “How much does it cost?”
It remains unclear what the value of MSNBC’s assets might be, but the total market capitalization of Comcast Corporation stands at $166 billion. Musk, recognized as the world's wealthiest individual, is estimated to have a net worth of around $314 billion. He previously acquired Twitter, now rebranded as X, for $44 billion in October 2022.
Joe Rogan, a podcaster and Trump supporter, also joined the conversation, suggesting to Musk that he would be willing to take over MSNBC anchor Rachael Maddow’s role if the acquisition happens. "I will wear the same outfit and glasses, and I will tell the same lies," he humorously pledged, leading to Musk's agreement, "Deal."
