Germany Defends Israel's Actions at Gaza School: "Israeli Massacre"
The German government has characterized the recent IDF airstrike on the Tabeen school in Gaza, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of 100 Palestinians, as a legitimate act of self-defense, arguing that Hamas exploits civilians as human shields.

The airstrike, which occurred on Saturday and targeted a facility sheltering displaced persons, is being deemed the deadliest incident since the onset of the current conflict.

“Israel has the right to defend itself. The reality is that Hamas uses schools, hospitals and kindergartens as command centers and that the people in the Gaza Strip are also abused against their will as protective shields,” stated Wolfgang Buechner, the deputy spokesman for the German government, during a press briefing in Berlin on Monday.

Buechner also cautioned the media to “be very careful about sitting on one-sided reports that are distributed by Hamas and believing everything that is spread by this side.”

The airstrike occurred during pre-dawn prayers on Saturday morning. Initially, the Gaza health ministry reported 60 fatalities and 47 injuries, but Al Jazeera later indicated that the death toll exceeded 100, with numerous others injured.

“In the hellish aftermath, body parts were strewn around the rubble and charred, bloodied bodies slumped in the wreckage of the two-story complex,” described an Agence France-Presse report.

In response, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemned the attack, asserting that “there is no and can be no justification for such actions.”

Josep Borrell, the EU high representative for foreign policy, echoed these sentiments on X, expressing that he was “horrified by images from a sheltering school in Gaza hit by an Israeli strike, with reportedly dozens of Palestinian victims.”

The Israeli military defended its actions by asserting that it targeted the school due to its use as a headquarters by Hamas, which the military claimed was responsible for planning and conducting terrorist operations against IDF forces and Israeli citizens.

In contrast, Hamas dismissed the Israeli assertions as fabrications, contending they were a false pretext to "target civilians, schools, hospitals, and refugee tents."

Following the October 7 raid from Gaza that resulted in over 1,100 Israeli fatalities, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared war on Hamas. Since then, Israeli military actions have reportedly led to nearly 40,000 Palestinian deaths and more than 92,000 injuries in the enclave.

A UN human rights envoy has characterized Israeli actions as “genocide,” prompting several countries to appeal to the International Criminal Court to intervene against West Jerusalem. Nevertheless, Germany has openly expressed its support for Netanyahu.
