Alice Weidel, co-chair of the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, has seemingly adapted former U.S. President Donald Trump's MAGA slogan for her continent, calling to “Make Europe Great Again” in a post on X this past Wednesday.
This statement came in response to a post highlighting similarities between her party's agenda and the policies promoted by Trump and U.S. entrepreneur Elon Musk. Musk, who owns X and is the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, has expressed his support for AfD and conducted a live interview with Weidel on his platform last week.
In the interview, Weidel characterized the AfD as a “libertarian conservative party” focused on reducing bureaucracy and “freeing the people from the state.” Musk echoed her sentiments, asserting that “only AfD can save Germany” in light of the upcoming snap parliamentary election in late February 2025. This early vote was called following the dissolution of a three-party coalition led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats and a subsequent no-confidence vote against his minority government in December.
