German Left-Wing MP Assaulted, Video Shows
Sahra Wagenknecht, a prominent critic of Berlin’s policies regarding Ukraine, was splashed with red paint during a speech at a rally on Thursday. Her associates suggested that this incident was connected to her opposition to arming Ukraine. A suspect has been apprehended.

Earlier this year, the veteran German leftist politician departed from Die Linke to create the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), a movement that leans left on economic issues while taking a more far-right stance on contentious topics like immigration.

Wagenknecht has consistently criticized German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government for its support of Ukraine.

During a campaign event in Erfurt on Thursday evening, a man, thought to be in his early 50s, sprayed red paint on the podium. Wagenknecht reportedly emerged uninjured, with just a few splashes of paint on her head, neck, and upper body. Party spokesperson Steffen Quasebarth mentioned that it appeared the assailant used a medical syringe.

After vacating the podium, Wagenknecht returned shortly thereafter.

Security personnel subdued and handcuffed the attacker. According to local media, police stated that he is under investigation for criminal damage to property. Although the motive is currently unclear, authorities suspect it may have been politically motivated, as reported by ZDF.

Die WELT cited Quasebarth and another member of Wagenknecht’s party, indicating that the assailant was shouting something in either Ukrainian or Russian, likely referencing the military conflict between Kiev and Moscow.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) late Thursday, Wagenknecht reassured her followers that she was unharmed but felt a “shock in my bones.”

“But don’t worry: we will not allow to intimidate us!” she added.

This is not the first time Wagenknecht has been targeted; back in 2016, she was hit with a cake due to her views on immigration.

Speaking at a rally in Berlin in June, Wagenknecht criticized Berlin’s “crazy” choice to permit Ukraine to launch long-range strikes into Russian territory.

“What scares me the most [is] the great danger that the war in Ukraine will become a major European war… they are crossing one red line after the other,” she contended at that time.

Wagenknecht urged the West to “stop playing with fire,” emphasizing the crucial need for efforts towards a peaceful resolution.

“War does not end with weapons, war is ended with peace talks,” she asserted.
