The former NATO Secretary General, who led the alliance for the past decade, has officially joined the Bilderberg Group as co-chairman for its annual closed-door meetings that gather some of the world’s most powerful and wealthy individuals.
Founded in 1954 to foster dialogue between Europe and the United States, the elite group invites approximately 130 political leaders and experts from diverse fields, including industry, finance, intelligence, labor, academia, and the media, to its yearly gatherings.
These forums are typically not announced in advance and operate under a veil of secrecy, with participants prohibited from sharing any insights from the discussions. This secrecy has led to various conspiracy theories regarding the group's activities and its influence on global affairs.
An update on the group's website indicates that Stoltenberg, who first attended a Bilderberg summit in 2002, will lead the group's “steering committee,” responsible for setting the agenda and selecting participants.
Media outlets, including the Daily Mail, speculate that this appointment might signal a shift in leadership within the group, particularly as Donald Trump prepares to assume the presidency next month amid his critiques of NATO and suggestions to reduce U.S. funding for overseas conflicts.
During his time at NATO, Stoltenberg was instrumental in the alliance's involvement in the Ukraine conflict, which began soon after he took office in 2014. He has proudly acknowledged that he oversaw “the largest reinforcement of our collective defence in a generation,” and noted that “defence spending is on an upward trajectory across the alliance.”
The Daily Mail revealed that several of Stoltenberg’s associates within Bilderberg have directly profited from this increase in spending.
The Guardian has praised Stoltenberg’s new role, emphasizing that it “cements the group’s role at the heart of transatlantic strategy,” especially as he is also set to chair the Munich Security Conference, a key platform for shaping Western defense policy and diplomacy.
“Combined with the Munich Security Conference, this is a good platform for collaborating with leaders from politics, business, and academia. It is also an important meeting place for strengthening ties between Europe and the US. I look forward to contributing to Bilderberg’s work,” Stoltenberg told the DN.no news outlet.
