The FBI has published video evidence showing Jabbar planning his catastrophic New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans. According to the agency, the assailant filmed the streets with Meta smart glasses during visits to the city months ahead of the incident.
The video, lasting nearly four minutes and without audio, compiles clips related to the January 1 incident at Bourbon Street in the French Quarter. The footage incorporates material from local surveillance cameras along with recordings made by Jabbar himself using his Meta glasses. The FBI noted that he had visited New Orleans on two occasions, in October and November, before executing the attack.
In the first clip, dated October 31, Jabbar can be seen riding a bicycle through the French Quarter while recording video through his Meta glasses. The next clip from October shows Jabbar testing the glasses by filming himself in a mirror at a rented residence.
A clip recorded in the early hours of January 1 depicts Jabbar placing the first improvised explosive device inside a blue cooler at the intersection of Bourbon Street and St. Peter Street. This cooler was later relocated a block away to Orleans Street by an unsuspecting passerby.
Another clip captures Jabbar setting a second IED in a “bucket-style” cooler at Bourbon and Toulouse Streets. The subsequent footage from surveillance shows him walking toward his truck to retrieve a second cooler; he is wearing a brown long coat, which was later discovered in the truck at the scene, establishing a connection to the attack.
Investigators have stated that the explosive devices did not detonate because of Jabbar's lack of expertise with explosives.
On January 1, around 3:15 am local time, Jabbar drove a rented pickup truck onto Bourbon Street, deliberately crashing into a crowd celebrating the New Year. The assault led to 14 deaths and numerous injuries. Following the collision, Jabbar exited the vehicle and exchanged gunfire with police officers before being fatally shot.
A Texas citizen, he had displayed a pattern of erratic behavior and had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State in videos shared online shortly before the attack. However, the FBI found no evidence of any direct communication between Jabbar and the terrorist organization, indicating that he acted independently.
