“This morning, an individual drove a car into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, killing a number of people and injuring dozens of others,” the FBI stated.
“The subject then engaged with local law enforcement and is now deceased. The FBI is the lead investigative agency, and we are working with our partners to investigate this as an act of terrorism,” the statement elaborated.
The attack occurred at a bustling tourist destination filled with visitors celebrating the New Year. According to New Orleans Police Department Chief Anne Kirkpatrick, at least ten people were killed, and 35 were injured during the incident.
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell quickly labeled the occurrence a “terrorist attack.” However, at the same briefing, FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Alethea Duncan disagreed, asserting, “this is not a terrorist event.”
Duncan also mentioned that the FBI was collaborating with local law enforcement to probe “improvised explosive devices” discovered near the attack site. Multiple media outlets reported unverified claims that bomb technicians conducted at least one controlled demolition of such a device.
