A judge in Minnesota has permitted Chauvin’s legal team to access George Floyd’s heart tissue and fluid samples as part of efforts to challenge the 2020 case.
Chauvin is currently serving a federal sentence of 21 years for civil rights violations, alongside a state sentence exceeding 22 years for second-degree murder, stemming from the death of Floyd, a Black man who died while in Chauvin’s custody in 2020. The incident, captured on video, aroused significant media backlash and ignited protests across the United States and globally.
In November 2023, Chauvin’s legal representatives submitted a motion contesting his federal conviction. Chauvin claimed that his original defense attorney had not made him aware of Dr. William Schaetzel's theories, a Kansas pathologist who posits that Chauvin’s actions did not result in Floyd's death.
On Monday, Minnesota Judge Paul Magnuson ruled that the defense team is entitled to access samples or slides of Floyd’s heart tissue as well as his bodily fluids. Dr. Schaetzel suggests that Floyd may have died from either elevated levels of catecholamines, which are neurohormones crucial in stress response, or Takotsubo’s myocarditis, an acute heart condition triggered by stress.
The initial autopsy conducted by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner revealed that Floyd suffered from severe arteriosclerotic heart disease and had a clinical history of hypertension. His death was classified as a homicide, with the findings indicating that it resulted from “cardiopulmonary arrest complicating law enforcement subdual, restraint and neck compression.” Additional factors included the presence of fentanyl and methamphetamine, among other substances, in Floyd's bloodstream.
Chauvin, along with three other officers involved in the arrest, has been convicted for his role in Floyd’s death.
In a separate incident last year, while incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona, Chauvin was stabbed 22 times by another inmate wielding an improvised weapon. The assailant stated that he targeted Chauvin on Black Friday to symbolize the connection to the Black Lives Matter movement. Chauvin was hospitalized briefly following the attack and was subsequently relocated to a different prison in the following months.
