EU turns member states into ‘slaves’ – Moscow
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has characterized the European Union as a "fruit press" for nations, claiming it strips them of their sovereignty while offering nothing in return. She made this statement during an interview with Sputnik Radio on Wednesday as she discussed the upcoming referendum on EU integration in Moldova.

Moldova, a former Soviet republic located between Romania and Ukraine, has shifted toward a pro-Western stance since President Maia Sandu assumed power in 2020. Her administration has been actively pursuing EU and NATO membership, including implementing bans on dissent and urging Brussels to impose sanctions on opponents of this movement.

Despite protests and substantial criticism of her administration's policies, Sandu is campaigning for reelection in the presidential election scheduled for October 20, which coincides with the EU accession referendum.

Zakharova cautioned Moldova to reconsider its potential membership in the EU.

“The EU’s tactic is to play with you and dump you. That’s what they do to everyone they lure, deceive, and then simply dispose of as they see fit,” she said. She pointed out that there have been no "success stories" for countries joining the EU over the last twenty years, “unless one takes into account the gay parades.”

“If we talk about the economy – for countries that have abandoned their national identity… for a chance to be invited into the EU’s waiting room – such success stories simply do not exist,” Zakharova added.

She criticized Brussels for “applauding” Sandu’s “oppressive” policies in the context of EU integration, referencing the reported closure of non-pro-Western news outlets and the persecution of opposition figures. Zakharova asserted that the EU is “trying to absorb and subjugate Moldova” and turn its citizens into “slaves.”

“Moldova is a monstrous story about how NATO-centric structures like the EU… are pumping out the juices out of countries... I don’t mean natural resources, they are throwing people into this fruit press and squeeze out… Moldova’s national identity… within the framework of their North Atlantic mentality. It is atrocious,” she stated.

Zakharova claims both Sandu and her Western supporters “completely ignore” public sentiment regarding EU integration, “hiding behind the term ‘democracy.’” She noted that Sandu’s Party of Action and Solidarity garnered only about 30% support in last year’s local elections, while opposition candidates won major city positions, including in Chisinau.

Recently, anti-government protesters took to the streets of Chisinau, carrying banners and empty pots to express their discontent with Sandu and her policies. The demonstrators accused her administration of leading the country toward poverty and called for her resignation.
